(00:36) investigation into child abuse images drug trafficking and fraud on the messaging app well for more on this I've been speaking to journalist Jennifer Moon who's based in Soul the latest one being uh there's been a series of emergency meetings like you said since the president has called up for digital sex crimes to be thoroughly investigated now that in the wake of local media reports the sexually explicit deep fake images and videos of South Korean women especially that of underage girls at junior high schools and universities
(01:10) Such content is often found in Telegram chat rooms, with one room having 227,000 users, which has sparked significant public outrage in Korea. As you may know, South Korea has one of the fastest average internet speeds in the world, and according to activists, it also faces an epidemic of digital sex crimes. These crimes include revenge porn and the use of spy cameras, with inadequate legislation to punish offenders. This time, the issue at hand is digital sex crimes involving deepfakes.
(01:44) What can the authorities do about this? It's hard to say definitively, but we will have to wait and see what comes out of these meetings. However, online deepfake sexual content cannot be left unchecked in Korea. The number of such cases has surged, doubling this year compared to 2021 when data was first collected. What's even more concerning is that the victims are usually female, including students as well as women in uniform.
(02:21) Recently, there has been a rapid escalation of deepfake abuse across schools nationwide, and what is even more worrying is that a large number of the offenders are believed to be minors.
